| | October 31, 2007 | | More New Toys to control home video from the road...... | By Rick Thomas, More News from The New York Times, under 'New Toys'....... The Slingbox line of 'place-shifting' devices from Sling Media lets you view and control video from your home cable or satellite system while you're away from home, letting you watch on your laptop. The new version, Slingbox Solo, handles HD digital output. It connects only to a single audio/video source, but with the current crop of digital HD/DVR set-top boxes, that's all most consumers need. The Solo is selling for $180 at most of the major electronics outlets. The installation process for the Solo is streamlined from past models, but there are still some things to be aware of. For HD, you'll need component audio/video cables that are not supplied; a 3-foot cable costs about $10. Broadband access is required, and the Solo must be attached directly to a router. With Wireless Network Operators delaying their Mobile TV initiatives until 2008, (who knows when) I know of some Independent Wireless Retailers experimenting with 'Slingbox' units in their retail stores (demos) with their customers, primarily to the 38% plus 'Smart Phone' users, and the product is being received well. I'll be doing more research on this product and those Wireless Retailers in the coming weeks to check on the impact of increased 'Data' line sales, and what type of sales potential may be available to the Independent Wireless Retailer Channel as a 'New Product' Accessory, to compliment the 'Tech' minded mobile user......keep your eye on 'Slingbox' for sure! | | |
| | August 23, 2007 | | Apple, Inc. has started to offer used iPhones at a discount......by Rick Thomas | Apple, Inc. has started to offer used iPhones at a discount, on its on-line store, less than 2 months after release. Consumers that are willing to buy 'B' Stock (refurbished) iPhones, will enjoy a $100.00 savings per unit, from regular price. A used 4-gigabyte model is $399.00 and the 8-gigabyte version is $499.00. Apple plans to sell over 1 million units by the end of September, adding to the 270,000 sold after the product's U.S. debut on June 29th. Apple declines to say how many 'refurbs' they have in stock. The refurb stock (inventory) consists of products sent back under Apple's 14-day Return-and-Refund Policy. That program allows buyers to exchange a defective unit for a new product or a refund. Only a small percentage of units had technical problems, and all refurbished products are tested, cleaned, and repackaged, according to Apple's site. Sounds like a 'good deal' to me, with excellent Customer Service, so if you are considering an iPhone, start with Apple's on-line store, and save a hundred bucks! | | |
