Sony brings back one of it's signature marketing brands, Walkman......

by Rick Thomas,

It's about time Sony brings back one of it's signature marketing brands. Walkman is now a part of the Sony-Ericsson Music Phone line. Here's what the New York Times (reprinted in The Denver Post, Monday, October 29, 2007 ) had to say about it in the 'New Toys' section:

"Remember Walkman? Sony's brought it back!

Even in the age of the iPod, another name still has prominence in the music player world: Walkman. Sony invented the portable music player and is trying to reclaim its lost glory with its line of Sony Ericsson W580i Walkman, while not competing directly with the iPhone, has many similar features for those who want a phone that offers music, the Internet, pictures, organizer functions and, oh yes, calls. The phone, which costs $300 on its own or as little as $80 with a new AT&T contract, is a slider that works on GSM networks like AT&T's. Transferring music to the W580i involves a USB connection to a PC and the bundled PC Suite software.

There is a Walkman button on the phone that takes you directly to the music. One interesting feature of the W580i is a pedometer that keeps track of your movement, whether you are running or walking, and keeps a daily log, in memory for a month."

Looks like AT&T has another excellent Music Phone to offer at an aggressive contract price point. The question is, when will it be available on other Network Operators, and competing platforms (CDMA) if at all?
